Richard Leete is the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam. He is also Resident Co-ordinator for the United Nations’ Operational Activities for Development in Malaysia, as well as UNFPA Representative. In his current capacity, Dr. Leete provides leadership of UN Country Team in Malaysia.
Prior to joining UNDP in October 2003, Mr. Leete served with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) at its New York Headquarters where he was Chief, Population and Development Branch, Technical Support Division, providing technical and policy leadership. Whilst serving in New York, he was, among others, Co-Chair of the United Nations Development Group (UNDG) Working Groups on Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Before joining UNFPA in 1996, he served with the British Government (ODA) on loan to the Government of Malaysia (1985-95) as adviser in human resources to the Economic Planning Unit, Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysia.
He has extensive knowledge of Asia having served most of his working life in the region and has published several books and technical articles on themes related to population and development.
Richard Leete obtained his Ph.D. in Economics (field of Population Studies) from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, University of London.
