Brazil’s currency is called the real (R$). The real is available in coins and bills of different denominations. Bills are available in the following values: R$1.00, R$2.00, R$5.00, R$10.00, R$20.00, R$50.00 and R$100.00. The coins, called centavos, come in denominations of R$0.01, R$0.05, R$0.10, R$0.25, R$0.50 and R$1.00.

Most major credit cards are accepted in hotels and restaurants, as well as in stores and other commercial venues. Traveller’s checks and foreign currency notes can be exchanged at most commercial banks, and some hotels provide exchange facilities for their guests. Banks are generally open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
