ICTs impact on economic growth and development and the challenge is to ensure that developing countries also benefit from ICTs. It is crucial that the World Summit of the Information Society (WSIS) help developing countries harness the potential of ICTs for development.

UNCTAD advocates designing and putting in place ICT strategies for economic development. It also supports the development of ICT statistics that help governments define development strategies and monitor progress.

From 15-19 November 2005, at WSIS in Tunis, UNCTAD will expand on these issues by (co)organizing:

Three parallel events: Measuring ICT Financing ICT for development E-Tourism An exhibition stand, where UNCTAD will: provide advisory services on free and open source software and, showcase its ICT-based programmes. Two workshops, where UNCTAD will present its: Information Economy Report and the ASYCUDA customs modernization program.
