Ensuring coherence and catalysing national development efforts calls for the participation not just of governments and international organizations, but also of civil society and the private sector. This is a key objective underpinning the Millennium Development Goals. For the first time in UNCTAD’s history, the agenda of the conference includes an item specifically devoted to partnerships. The multi-stakeholder partnerships are intended to enhance the pragmatic, action-oriented outcome of UNCTAD XI for the benefit of developing countries. Relying on a combination of various partners, ranging from Governments, NGOs, private-sector entities and academics to other international organizations, the conference is expected to launch multi-stakeholder partnerships in the areas of helping developing countries make full use of information and communication technologies; addressing the problems of the commodities sector; maximizing the benefits of foreign direct investment; and Internet-based capacity building and training. The document includes a detailed presentation of individual partnerships.
