The role of policy in promoting greater development benefits from foreign direct investment (FDI).

In the context of addressing the need to build internationally competitive productive capacity in developing countries, this joint UNCTAD/WAIPA session, held on 15 June, focused on the role of policy in promoting greater development benefits from foreign direct investment (FDI). It comprised five panellists, more than 20 ministerial interventions and several contributions from international organizations, civil society and the private sector. The development benefits of FDI were underscored by several participants, thus moving the debate away from the question of whether FDI should be promoted to that of how to maximize the benefits and reduce the risks associated with FDI. It was agreed that the responsibility rested both with host and home countries.
