Measuring ICT

With the huge interest in the information society and the benefits it can bring, countries are looking at how to measure their own progress towards creating an information society. This global event will bring together ICT stakeholders at the national, regional and international levels:

  • To present an internationally comparable set of core statistical indicators for the information society agreed on by international agencies working in the field. What are the core ICT indicators for monitoring and evaluating, and which new indicators could be added in the future?
  • To debate the importance of measuring the information society for ICT policy making and development in areas such as education, government and health. Participants will be shown concrete examples of efforts underway to benchmark and monitor ICT use and its impact on development.
  • To illustrate the contribution of ICT measurement to the WSIS follow-up.
In response to the WSIS Plan of Action, major steps to monitor progress toward an information society have already been undertaken. What has been accomplished so far, and what needs to be done in the future, in particular regarding capacity-building activities in developing countries?
