Symposium on the trade dimension of international development initiatives
Organised by the Agency for International Trade Information and Cooperation (AITIC) and the Secretariat of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States on the occasion of UNCTAD XI

Context

AITICThe purpose of the Symposium is to take stock of the various major initiatives that have taken place in recent years in favour of development-including, among others, the Doha Work Programme, LDC III, the Monterrey Financing for Development Conference and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)-and the cross-cutting issues dealing with the contribution of trade to the fulfilment of their development objectives.

The focus of the Symposium will be on:

  1. Trade and poverty eradication through the MDGs;
  2. Trade and sustainable development Johannesburg Implementation Plan);
  3. Development dimension of the Doha Ministerial Declaration;
  4. How to better articulate the technical assistance and capacity building initiatives to promote a better integration of poor countries into the multilateral trading system;
  5. Public and private sector partnership for furthering trade-related development objectives

The Symposium will be attended by policy-makers and intergovernmental agency officials to identify the means to render the objectives of the international development initiatives more effective and to brainstorm on the design of best practices to respond effectively to the obstacles in the way of achieving the development goals and means to eradicate poverty.
