The Role of Competition Policy in Promoting Competitiveness and Development

 Context | Agenda | Documents

Context

Market-oriented economic reforms including trade and FDI liberalization undertaken in most countries during the last two decades need to be guided by competition principles to ensure economic efficiency, equity and international competitiveness. The role of competition policy is instrumental in enhancing productivity, investment and export competitiveness of firms in developing countries. The overall objective of this event is to engage an international debate of high-level officials attending UNCTAD XI on the role of competition law and policy as an effective tool to enhance competitiveness and development, while at the same time promoting equity, consumer protection and poverty alleviation. To mark this event, an UNCTAD publication on Competition Policy, Competitiveness and Development will be officially launched. The meeting will also review UNCTAD’s capacity building and technical assistance activities on competition policy and consumer protection, and provide an opportunity for donor agencies and recipients to assess developing countries&apo; and LDC’s needs and priority areas for further work.
