The first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (Geneva, December 2003) highlighted the great potential of ICTs as an enabler for sustainable development, contributing to the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Declaration of Principles and the Plan of Action recommend that concrete ICT applications aimed at realizing the benefits of the information society and assisting in reducing poverty be proposed on the occasion of the second phase of the WSIS (Tunis, November 2005) and beyond.
In the context of UNCTAD's participation to WSIS, a parallel event will be held in Tunis, the 17 November 2005, between 3 pm and 5 pm, Kram Center, Room Sfax, on E-Tourism in developing countries (more links, fewer leaks).
ICT policy makers, practitioners, experts are invited to find out more about the UNCTAD's work on e-tourism: a concrete package aiming at helping developing countries to make the most of their tourism potential, through wider involvement of local SMEs in ICT networks as well as innovative ICT policies. Trends and strategic challenges in the on-line marketplace, adoption of e-business models through 3 case studies, as well as partnerships and supporting initiatives will be presented.
